New Ways of Managing Renewable Energy Production and Consumption

New partnerships

DONG Energy is practising how to cut this Gordian knot together with selected customers, so that the supply remains just as reliable as it is today. Now NaturMælk will also play a role in this project, and the energy consumption of this small dairy will have an impact on the future grid.

Peter Madsen, Operations Manager at NaturMælk, says:”

We have a clear set of values in terms of ecology, nature conservation and resource consumption. Based on our climate partnership with DONG Energy, we have reduced our energy consumption by more than 10% since 2010 and we also reserve renewable energy from offshore wind turbines. Now we take the next step and we’ll allow DONG Energy to switch various engines on and off for shorter or longer periods. In this way we make electricity available to the grid for the benefit of others. This is also a way to keep the frequency in the grid constant."

Developing an intelligent grid

Ivan Kristian Pedersen, Project Manager in DONG Energy, says the following about the background for the cooperation between DONG Energy and Naturmælk:

”I’m very pleased that NaturMælk is willing to take part in our work with the intelligent grid.  The dairy is to be connected to the advanced IT system called Power Hub. The system is part of our efforts to control the production and consumption in an advanced intelligent way.  This will give us a higher utilisation of green energy.”

Electricity customers who make their appliances available to us are paid for their flexibility. This could for instance include major businesses with emergency power generating sets that can be switched on when the demand is high, or cold counters in supermarkets, which do not necessarily need to be switched on 24 hours a day.
