Existing sewer systems in many areas are not necessarily dimensioned to cope with the increase in extreme weather, including heavier rainfalls, that accompany climate change. This must be taken into account in future urban planning, or when renovating sewer systems.

Technologies to mitigate this problem range from physical products such as pipes and pumps to software for urban water planning, including modeling and tools for dimensioning future sewage and waste water systems.
