Micro Combined Heat and Power Plants

Micro Combined Heat and Power Plants

Miniaturized heat and power plants for the home.

Micro combined heat and power (micro CHP) systems are designed for domestic use. They produce heat for the individual consumer and electricity that may be used on-site or sold to the grid.

The principle of a micro CHP is simple: a gas, biofuel or oil-fuelled engine drives a generator which produces electricity. The heat from the engine block and exhaust, which would normally be wasted, is absorbed by coolant water. The heated water can then be used directly for central heating and domestic hot water, or indirectly for air conditioning. The systems may also be based on fuel cell technology, making micro CHP systems more energy-efficient, less noisy and less polluting.

Due to the on-site production of heat and electricity, losses from distribution are eliminated and an overall efficiency of more than 85% is typical.

Danish micro CHP systems benefit from extensive knowledge and expertise in building and controlling larger combined heat and power plants.
