Hydrogen produced from renewable sources, such as solar and wind power, is considered to have a high potential for storing excess power for later distribution and use in transport, domestic and industry.
Hydrogen is an extremely clean-burning fuel and is non toxic. It generates energy when it is combined with oxygen – e.g. in a fuel cell via an electrochemical reaction. In a fuel cell the energy contained in hydrogen can be converted to either heat or electricity or a combination, which is the case when build into Micro Heat and Power Plants (microCHP) for domestic and industry use.
It is also possible to use hydrogen to produce power in a combustion engine. Vehicle using hydrogen as fuel is in use for various purposes and an infrastructure of filling stations are developing in Denmark and the rest of Scandinavia.
Use of hydrogen presents many advantages – especially if the hydrogen is obtained from renewable sources or excess energy. Much research and development is focused on increasing the efficiency of hydrogen related technologies and optimizing the ways hydrogen is stored.
At the same time there is a growing need for an expansion and modernisation of the existing energy infrastructure. This will require a systematic optimisation of the energy system, and today’s power grids will gradually transform into interactive,...
