Even as energy demands are changing and alternative energy sources for transport and heating are found, the need for oil in the petrochemical industries is not going to diminish in the foreseeable future. The plastics and medical industries depend on efficient oil extraction and will continue to do so for many years to come. In spite of all the changes, our societies are still highly dependent on stable oil supplies.
Oil extraction technologies are becoming more efficient and higher prices will provide plenty of incentive for this development to continue. On the other hand it is also important that oil extraction techniques become more protective of the environment. Traditionally, concerns for the environment have played a very small role, but both regulations and companies' increasing wish to preserve a green image is directing efforts towards a more responsible utilization of nature's resources.
Denmark has been drilling for oil successfully for some decades now and the experience gained in the process is now being used to make oil extraction more environmentally sound everywhere. In particular, efforts are being made to ensure that prospectors in Greenland's waters will proceed in a manner consistent with the high environmental standards for which Denmark has won international recognition. A solid know-how in efficient and environmentally sound platform based oil extraction has been developed among Danish companies in the energy sector.
Thus, using energy more efficiently in both housing and production is an obvious step towards becoming independent of limited energy resources such as fossil fuels. And there is a large potential for doing just that. Saving energy in buildings B...
