Efficient Natural Gas Technologies

Natural gas is among the most important energy sources worldwide and the development of efficient natural gas technologies is a major concern.

From extraction over transport and storage to use in homes or at peaking power plants, the handling of natural gas must be as efficient and optimized as possible. Efficiency will ensure that the remaining natural gas reserves will last longer. Efficient use, transport and storage of natural gas are also important, because natural gas is a potent greenhouse gas until it is converted into energy.

In addition to the problems of natural resource scarcity and emissions, sources of natural gas are often located very far away from the final consumer. This provides yet another incentive to develop more efficient means of transporting natural gas. This problem is growing because local supplies are getting smaller and imports from remote suppliers are increasingly becoming necessary.

At peaking power plants high natural gas efficiency can be achieved through combining gas turbines with a steam turbine in combined cycle mode. In homes gas stoves, furnaces and other gas-powered home appliances must be designed with efficiency in mind. In the transportation sector, vast improvements are needed to make engines based on natural gas more efficient.

Denmark has been a world pioneer in efficient natural gas technologies from the start and is still at the absolute forefront. Danish companies and organizations have accumulated know-how and technological solutions for 30 years in all aspects of natural gas extraction, transport, storage and use. Because of efficient natural gas technologies and know-how Denmark has become a net exporter of natural gas, in spite of the fact that reserves in the Danish territory are quite limited.
