Blade Technology

Blade design is essential for the efficiency of the wind turbine. As a global wind power hub, Denmark is home to some of the world’s best researchers within blade technology.

Typically a turbine is made out of three high-tech blades mounted at the rotor. Blade technology focuses on how to design blades in the most efficient way. This includes the design of the blade’s shape, its weight, the materials used to produce it and how to make it strong without increasing the weight.

The technology is ever-developing. As the size of the wind turbines continue to increase, the requirements to improved blade technology continue to rise as well. Improvements are made by developing new materials which make the blades more efficient and environmentally friendly at the end of the wind turbine’s life cycle.

As a pioneer within the wind turbine industry, Denmark was also the first country to experience waste problems associated with the wind turbines made over 20 years ago. Acknowledging these issues, Danish researchers are continually improving the materials used in the blades. This includes combining them in new ways to ensure that they contain value and can be reused at their end of life cycle.

For decades, development and testing of different blade designs have taken place in close cooperation between pioneering scientists and the Danish wind industry. A cooperation which has resulted in Denmark positioning itself as the world’s leader within this area.
