Our Stirling engine updraft gasification plants convert fresh wood chips into electricity and heating. The wood chips are slowly heated to release a product gas, which is led into the combustion chamber and ignited. The high temperature combustion creates an optimal temperature differential to drive the Stirling engine.
Updraft gasification is a simple gasification process which produces a low-calorific product gas ideally suited for combustion with a Stirling engine. Unlike traditional gasification methods (primarily downdraft), updraft gasification is simpler and requires less pretreatment of the biomass. Typical biomass plants require dried wood chips or wood pellets, but the updraft gasifier runs on fresh wood chips, i.e. fresh wood + wood chipper = ready fuel. This fuel type is one of the least energy intensive available, with the lowest lifetime carbon costs.
Our proprietry updraft gasifier technology coupled with Stirling engines enables us to supply modular solutions with an electrical output ranging from 35 - 140 kWe electricity and 140 - 560 kWth heat. This output is typically ideal for office buildings, residential blocks, hotels, hospitals and other sites with a heating (or cooling) demand of more than 5,000 hours annually.
