Horns Rev II

Horns Rev II

Solution type: in Development phase

Offshore wind farm with longest distance to shore.

The offshore wind farm Horns Rev II is an extension of the existing farm at Horns Rev in Denmark, and the construction will commence in the spring of 2009. The owner of this offshore project is DONG Energy A/S, and Siemens Wind Power is supplying 91 2.3 MW wind turbines. The capacity of the wind farm is 209 MW, equivalent to the power supply of 200,000 households, or 800 GWh a year, corresponding to approximately 2% of the total Danish consumption of electricity.

The Horns Rev wind farm is located near Blåvandshuk in the North Sea at a water depth of 32 meters. This location is at a distance of 27 – 35 km from the shore (the furthest distance to shore of any wind farm in the word). It means great challenges for the construction work due to the weather conditions this far out at sea. Siemens manages this mainly because of their expertise in the field of offshore wind power, and the Horns Rev II project thus marks the company’s position as market leader in offshore wind power.
