Single family dwellings in Spain

Single family dwellings in Spain

Solution type: in Development phase

Energy efficiency is just as important in warm climates as in cold. In Spain, Rockwool Peninsular is part of a project to show the potential of optimum insulation in eight single family dwellings.

The project is a full scale demonstration of the potential of using optimum insulation, carried out in cooperation with CENER, the Spanish National Centre of Renewable Energies. It comprises the construction of eight almost identical single family dwellings in the city of Caparroso in northern Spain. The only difference is the thickness of the insulation. Some of the dwellings are built with optimum insulation, while others are insulated according to the minimum legal requirements, contained in the Spanish Technical Building Code (CTE).

“The dwellings are constructed in a conventional way; walls are made of brick with an air cavity which contains Rockwool insulation, with the defined thicknesses in each case. The project demonstrates how dwellings with a higher level of insulation achieve extraordinary savings and optimal energy efficiency,” says Jordi Bolea, Lobby & Standards Responsible in Rockwool Peninsular.

Monitoring

Over a period of one year, the dwellings will be monitored on several parameters such as the inside and outside temperature, humidity and wind control, etc. Meteorological data obtained in the Caparroso observatory will also be included.
