Technical Specifications

In order to move away from their reliance on landfill five inter-municipal waste management companies under the name of Westenergy Oy Ab decided to establish a waste-to-energy facility in Vaasa.

Encouraged by EU legislation, this is the first waste-to-energy facility for municipal waste of many in Finland.

In May 2008 Ramboll signed a contract with Westenergy Oy Ab for consulting services for the planning and implementation of a green-field waste-to-energy facility. Ramboll assists the client through all stages of the project from project analysis and planning to commissioning and follow-up on the contracts in the guarantee period. Ramboll is responsible for both mechanical and electrical equipment and civil works.

When completed in December 2012, the waste-to-energy facility will process 150,000 tonnes of household waste from 400,000 inhabitants annually and will produce 15 MW electricity and 45 MW heat.

It will take six months longer than usual to build the facility as it will be built on solid rock. Since the foundations will be built in parallel with the final decisions on the project, the construction phase will not be longer than usual, however.

The energy produced at the facility will be equivalent to the electricity demand of 7,000 households and will cover 25 per cent of the district heating demand in Vaasa.
