District Heating in the Copenhagen Region

District Heating in the Copenhagen Region

Solution type: Implemented
Part of focus: Smart Cities

The 160 km hot water transmission system is owned by CTR, VEKS and Vestforbrænding and supplies heat to 21 distribution networks in 18 local authorities. Besides Copenhagen Energy operates a steam system covering 20% of the system

CTR is owned by Copenhagen, Frederiksberg, Tårnby, Gladsaxe and Gentofte municipalities

VEKS is owned by Albertslund, Brøndby, Glostrup, Greve, Hvidovre, Høje-Taastrup, Ishøj, Roskilde, Rødovre, Solrød and Vallensbæk municipalities

The waste management company Vestforbrænding supplies heat in Herlev and Ballerup municipalities.

The total heated floor area is 60 mio. m2 and the annual heat sale is 30.000 TJ

The average emission is 100 kgCO2/MWh sale to enduser

Technical Specifications

The 18 local authorities are responsible for the least cost heat supply planning of the system in accordance with the Heat Supply Act

The system is further developed and optimized to meet climate objectives by connecting districts with existing and new buildings to the grid and by shifting to more renewable energy. A heat market group formed by CTR, VEKS and Copenhagen Energy optimizes the heat production from
• 4 CHP plants: Amagerværket, Avedøreværket, Svanemølleværket and H.C.Ørstedværket
• 3 waste-to-energy CHP plants Amagerforbrænding, Vestforbrænding and KARA/NOVEREN and
• 50 peak load boilers

Ramboll has from 1970 to 2009 provided a wide range of consultancy services to most of the energy companies and authorities in the region, e.g.
• Heat supply planning for most of the municipalities.
• Planning, design and implementation of the heat transmission networks for CTR and Vestforbrænding, more than 10 distribution networks incl. Frederiksberg Forsyning and the three waste to energy plants, Vestforbrænding, Amagerforbrænding and KARA/NOVEREN
• Rehabilitation of old district heating networks for several of the district heating companies
• Stationary and pressure transient hydraulic analysis of the whole transmission system
