Many communities set objective for reducing their climate foot print in a cost effective and sustainable way.
The Danish Island of Samsoe, which declared this objective 10 ears ago, has now reached the objective and inspired others, e.g. Danton in China and Rambolls Zira project.
Larger communities in Denmark, e.g. The City of Copenhagen, have set-up a similar objective, and the Danish Prime Minister has declared that Denmark shall be independent of fossil fuels in the long run.
It is not a technical problem to be CO2 neutral. The challenge is to reach the objective in the most intelligent and sustainable way at the lowest use of costs and natural resources. We know how to do it.
Ramboll is a leading consultant within institutional and technical solutions and has provided consultancy services for projects and cases to many large as well as small communities with focus on these climate solutions, e.g. the City of Copenhagen (CO2 neural in 2025), The local community Rise at the Danish Island Ærø (large scale solar and biomass), Nordhavn (urban development in Copenhagen), Zira Island in Azerbajdjan and the City of Beijing (least cost environmental master plan).
Technical Specifications
In order to move in the right direction at the most economical and sustainable use of resources the community should consider:
- Strong legal and institutional capacity being able to co-operate at all levels
- Least cost urban planning with focus on heating, cooling, traffic and the environmental impact
- Traffic systems with focus on efficient public transport, bicycles and walking
- Integrated district energy or community heating and cooling (depending on climate zone) combined with thermal storages for district heating and cooling for more efficient use of:
o Waste to Energy
o CHP combined with heat pumps to integrate the fluctuating wind energy
o Biomass
o Biogas
o Large scale solar heating
o Geothermal heating
o Wind energy farms
- Efficient low energy buildings with:
o optimal building envelope,
o large thermal capacity,
o low temperature heating,
o high temperature cooling and
o low electricity consumption
