The city of Tongren is located in the Northeast part of the Guizhou province. It is home to some light industry and is a well-known source of mercury. The area is famed for its extraordinarily rich plant life and wildlife. However, the environment is threatened by wastewater pollution, and about two thirds of all urban effluents are discharged into surface waters without treatment. The Chinese government has carried out projects to improve the environment, which involves the creation and expansion of wastewater treatment plants – including Tongren.

Technical Specifications

When it was time to establish a wastewater treatment plant with a daily capacity of 50,000 m³ at Tongren, negotiations with another major pump manufacturer were already underway, when Grundfos presented an alternative and more innovative solution.

The Grundfos team presented a solution, which was tailored to protect the environment from further pollution, and at the same time to meet the needs of the contractor, Malthe Winje AS.
The Grundfos solution was chosen, and to secure reliable delivery, installation and commissioning, the whole process was supported by the Central Customer Service Unit (CCSU) – a special Grundfos department devoted to handling large-scale project management anywhere in the world.

The innovative system design accurately matched the customer’s requirements, and the equipment delivered was thoroughly inspected to ensure full satisfaction. With final installation and commissioning scheduled for 2005, the city of Tongren will benefit from efficient wastewater treatment in the years to come.
