Digestion of waste containing high ammonia levels

Funded projects: ForskEL

One of the main causes for imbalance in Danish biogas plants is the high ammonia load. Ammonia mainly inhibits acetate-utilising methanogens. There is, however, another option, acetate oxidation that converts acetate to CH4, which is less liable to ammonia inhibition. We will develop a new approach to avoid ammonia inhibition by use of acetate oxidation.
