Photovoltaics in Uganda

Photovoltaics in Uganda

Solution type: in Development phase

In cooperation with a local partner EnergiMidt is offering energy consultancy services and photovoltaics in Uganda.

The electricity supply in Uganda is very problematic. The need for electricity far exceeds the production. The problem has grown in recent years due to low water level in Lake Victoria and hence reduced electricity production from the hydroelectric power stations. Lack of electricity forces the energy companies to disrupt the supply for long periods every day and as a consequence both companies and private households have installed standby power generators based on diesel. This is a very expensive way of producing electricity. Consequently, there is a great need for saving energy and alternative methods for producing electricity in Uganda.

Based on EnergiMidts competences in regard to energy consultancy services and sustainable energy such as photovoltaics, we have established cooperation with Konserve Consult Ltd, a local firm in Uganda. Based on experiences we have learned that it is difficult to convince local companies of realizing energy savings project – even though we work according to a “no cure-no pay” concept. As a result we now focus primarily on standby power generators and PV plants.
