Energy conservations at Roedkaersbro Dairy

Rødkærsbro Dairy has experienced that better use of energy pays off. Purposive energy consultancy service from EnergiMidt has resulted in a yearly saving of almost 1 million DKK in energy costs.

The results of the energy consultancy service showed that focus on energy spending pays off for a dairy company like Arla Foods with a yearly electricity and gas bill in a three-digit million amount. Due to this Arla Foods has established cooperation with energy consultants of chosen electricity companies who are to help Arla Foods in identifying the saving potential of the company’s 30 Danish dairies.

An energy consultant from EnergiMidt started out by reviewing Rødkærsbro Dairy’s energy and water consumption in the production area, the packing department and the storehouse. This resulted in an overall energy plan.
After completion of the energy plan, Arla and EnergiMidt invited offers in order to get an idea of the financial aspects of the energy conservation projects. In this way the management of the dairy got a basis for decisions where the total financial outcome of the different alternatives was thoroughly illustrate.

The largest energy savings are realised in the following areas:

• Stop of unnecessary cooling at the palletizing store room – yearly savings of 325 Mega Watt Hour.
• Frequency control of compressed air system – yearly savings of 166 Mega Watt Hour.
• Frequency control of cream separators which now more often can be started or stopped according to need – yearly savings of 120 Mega Watt Hour.
