Vestforsyning - Maabjerg BioEnergy – World Class Biogas

Solution type: in Development phase

Maabjerg BioEnergy is projected to be the world’s largest biogas plant
The plant will have enough capacity to process 450,000 tons of biomass per year. 386,000 tons will be manure from agriculture, this corresponds to manure from approx. 25,000 animal units the remaining will be organic waste from the food industry.

That will mean that Maabjerg BioEnergy will displace 50,000 ton of CO2. The 20,000 ton from energy production and the remaining 30,000 ton through reduced emission of CO2, equivalents, in the form of reduced emissions of methane.
The total production of biogas will reach 18.44 million m3 of biogas, and a total energy level of 430 TJ.

Benefits to the local society and food industry

  • Cheap greenhouse gas reduction (0 to 6 Euro/tons CO2)
  • Utilisation of organic waste from industries and waste water
  • Efficient redistribution of nutrients
  • Organic fertiliser free of pathogens and weed seeds and with declared nutrient content
  • Smell from slurry reduced as the slurry is turned into a thinner liquid, which disperses quicker into soil

It is expected that Maabjerg BioEnergy will increase the annual turnover in the food industry with 6.7 mill EUR and increase the employment with 300 man-years.
