Copenhagen Wheel

Copenhagen Wheel

Solution type: in Development phase
Part of focus: Sustainable Transportation

New technology, developed by the MIT in cooperation with the City of Copenhagen, aims to make biking more attractive

Packed inside the sleek, bright red hub of the Copenhagen Wheel is a veritable Swiss army knife’s worth of electronic gadgets and novel functions, inspired by the KERS system, which has revolutionized Formula One racing. It can store energy every time the rider brakes and then gives that power back to provide a boost when going uphill. The wheel also includes technology for monitoring the bicycle’s speed, direction and distance traveled, as well as collecting data on air pollution and even the proximity of the rider’s friends.

The wheel is under development and should be on sale within a year.
Claus Juhl, Managing Director at the City of Copenhagen:
- The City of Copenhagen plans to use the wheel as a substitute for the City's Home Care vehicles.

The Copenhagen Wheel is a project by SENSEable City Lab MIT for the City of Copenhagen, in cooperation with Ducati Energia and supported by the Italian Ministry for the Environment.
