Today the Mayor of Beijing, Mr Guo Jinlong, and the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen, Mr Frank Jensen, signed a mutual agreement between their two cities.

Lord Mayor Jensen underlined that the agreement was a sign of the good relations between China and Denmark:

“Our two countries have strong and friendly ties, and I am very honoured that Beijing took this initiative,” says Lord Mayor Frank Jensen. “The agreement between Beijing and Copenhagen fits well into the national agreement on collaboration between China and Denmark.”

The two capitals have shared interests in the area of sustainable urban development. Copenhagen is the ideal place for developing and testing innovative green solutions. Copenhagen cleantech firms are among the world's most successful. Combined with the city’s ambition to become the first carbon-neutral capital in 2025, this makes Copenhagen the ideal proving ground for developing ideas that can be applied in cities worldwide.

“Since 1995, Copenhagen has reduced its carbon emissions by more than 40 percent. Our district heating system delivers energy efficient, reliable and affordable heating to 98 percent of households, and the fact that more than half of Copenhagen residents bike on a daily basis, keeps our air clean and saves $43m every year due to avoided costs related to pollution, noise, accidents and congestion,” says Lord Mayor Frank Jensen.

Background

The sister city agreement was signed today at Beijing City Hall. The delegation from Copenhagen will remain in Beijing until Friday.

Tomorrow, Lord Mayor Frank Jensen will speak at the Beijing Forum on Sustainable Development of Cities, and at the EU conference “Sustainable Urbanisation Seminar”, where Danish and Chinese decision-makers and entrepreneurs can exchange experiences on green construction and infrastructure such as district energy and water supply.
