Samsoe Lets the Sun Deliver the Power

Next year, the sun will deliver 80 percent of Danish island Samsoe’s power supply.

Many public buildings on the island will within next year be equipped with 4400 square meter solar cells. This is one of the council of Samsoe’s contributions to the ambition of making Samsoe independent of fossil fuels by 2030.

Profitable business
Head of technique and environment in the council of Samsoe, Per Olsen, purchased solar cells himself two years ago and got them installed on the roof of his house. However, at that particular time solar cells were not profitable business.

“A lot has happened within the past few years. You can remunerate and depriciate solar systems within 10-12 years, and as a city council you can borrow money on a 20-25 year period which gives actual revenue from day one, says Per Olsen.
He recommends other city councils to do as Samsoe. “It’s simply profitable business”, he says.

Samsoe council owns five offshore wind mills. Read more on Samsoe on State of Green.
