Rio+20: Global competition encourages future sustainable leaders

UN and Aarhus University launch a global competition related to the UN Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development. State of Green supports the initiative by co-sponsoring competition prize.

"How do business schools and universities develop a new generation of leaders who can handle great, societal challenges such as an increasing world population, climate changes, and scarcity of water, food and energy?"

Encouraging ideas for integrating sustainability in education
This issue frames the main challenge of the PRME LEADERS+20 Competition, which is now being introduced to more than 100,000 students and their lecturers at universities and business schools worldwide. The aim of the competition is to encourage them to co-create and come up with ideas for how sustainability and accountability can be integrated into curricula, education and teaching.

PRME LEADERS+20 Competition
The PRME LEADERS+20 Competition is developed in close cooperation between Aarhus University, Business and Social Sciences and UN PRME - Principles of Responsible Management Education – a UN Global Compact based initiative comprising more than 400 business schools and universities determined to develop a new generation of leaders for a sustainable future.

Attractive prizes
The winning team will be awarded a trip to Rio in June 2012 – the Rio Experience - and an invitation to present their ideas to rectors and deans, international companies and the UN at the Rio+20 PRME Global Forum and the Rio+20 UN Corporate Sustainability Forum.

The Danish experience
The second prize – the Danish Experience - comprises funding for scholarships for courses in sustainability and management at Aarhus University Summer University. State of Green has added a full day tour to some of the leading companies, politicians or industry experts in Denmark within the field of energy, climate and environment to the prize, offering the winners the opportunity to experience Danish solutions live.

Executive Director at State of Green, Finn Mortensen, supports the competition
"Sustainable economic growth, security of energy supply and environmental protection are among the greatest global challenges today. Overcoming these challenges will require great leadership and we therefore welcome and support the PRME LEADERS+20 Competition. We see it as a great initiative towards preparing the future generation to handle the global challenges", says Finn Mortensen.

Universities have much to offer
Green growth and sustainable development presupposes new competences for leaders and staff. These new requirements must be incorporated into degree programmes, and, according to Dean Svend Hylleberg, Aarhus University, Business and Social Sciences, universities have much to offer in this context.
