The investigation of possibilities of utilising sustainable and profitable biofuel for aviation will benefit the airline companies as well as the norweigan population.
"We are excited that this initiative will contribute to lower greenhouse gas emissions, both for the airline companies as well as for Norway as a nation. The fact that it is an innovative project involving new technologies only makes it even more interesting," said project manager Magnus Killingland from Ramboll Energy.
He continued, "The project is an example of how our understanding of technology can help solve today’s environmental challenges if it is applied in the right way, which is exactly why Ramboll was selected."
Reduced emissions despite marked increase in traffic
Avinor is seeking to stabilise and reduce climate gas emissions from Norwegian aviation despite anticipated traffic volume growth. The replacement of fossil fuels with sustainable biofuels, in conjunction with the introduction of energy efficient engines and newer airplanes, will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions considerably.

The entire chain of production from bio feedstocks to establishing biofuel production plants in Norway needs to be defined following a thorough review of different technologies. The project will focus on sustainable production and resources not competing with food production. The initial priority is the development of certified drop-in biofuels that comply with the stringent requirements for jet fuel.
Multidisciplinary initiative
"The project will be both interesting and challenging since it demands multidisciplinary input from many departments. Ramboll will oversee meetings and seminars with companies interested in participating in the development of new technologies as well as public agencies, European airlines, environmental interest groups, and research and development institutions from both Norway and overseas. These consultations will identify the challenges and potential solutions relating to the use of biofuel," added Magnus.
