New Recycling Scheme from Rockwool Turns Waste into a Resource

Internationally, the Danish minister for the environment, mrs. Ida Auken, has promoted the idea of “the circular economy”: An economy, where waste is seen and treated as a resource instead of a burden – where more waste is recycled instead of being burned or deposited to landfill.

This week, mrs. Ida Auken visited the Rockwool Group’s factory in Doense, Denmark, to make the official inauguration of the first national, Danish scheme for collecting and recycling old stone wool insulation products from e.g. energy renovation and other building projects.

Making recycling profitable

“The last many years, mankind has continued to exploit the world’s natural resources to a degree where we cannot just go on. We need to think differently. And that is why I want to show the direction by focusing on specific solutions which can help us ensure that the future growth also becomes a green growth – balancing social and environmental needs with the economic needs,” the minister has earlier said.

”Rockwool’s new recycling scheme is a good example of how it is possible to recycle waste in a both economical and environmentally profitable way,” she said during the inauguration event.

Part of a bigger plan

The introduction of the new, Danish stone wool recycling scheme reflects the Rockwool Group’s long-term ambition to increase the company’s sustainability performance. Denmark is due to its geographical and logistical characteristics an interesting pilot ground for the recycling scheme, which - depending on the experiences – can be introduced on other Rockwool markets if found feasible.
