New Directive to Strenghten European Energy Efficiency
Energy efficiency: billions to be made in savings
Mandatory energy-saving measures, including renovating public buildings, energy-saving schemes for utilities, and energy audits for all large firms, will be required by a new EU energy efficiency directive. Cutting energy consumption by 20% could save the EU €50 billion per year.
Saving plans for utilities
Energy companies covered by the directive will have to achieve a "cumulative end-use energy savings target" by 2020. This target will have to be at least equivalent to achieving new savings, each year, from 2014 to 2020, of 1.5% of annual energy sales to final customers, by volume, and averaged over the most recent three-year period before the directive takes effect.
Benefiting Danish clean tech
According to calculations from the Danish Energy Association the directive will create a market for up to €320 billion. Considering the current market share Danish Companies will potentially get €6.7 billion, and that can create up to 2000 new jobs.

-The directive strengthens the foundation for a thriving energy sector, which complete savings for DKK 7 billion in Denmark alone each year. Now there is an even bigger amount to collect for companies engaged in green solutions and consulting. And it will affect other sectors as well – underlining the point that green transition and economic growth goes hand in hand, according to Ulrich Bang, Director of International and EU Affairs at Danish Energy Association.
