New Danish Offshore Windmill Foundations to Stand Ground in the North Sea

By 2012, foundations for offshore windmills developed by Danish company Universal Foundation will stand ground at the Dogger Bank in the North Sea.

“The new foundations will prove their worth next year as they will be placed at 25 meters sea level where the waves can reach a height of 18 metres”, says CEO of Universal Foundation Henrik Lundorf Nielsen to ingenioren.dk.
Using a vacuum and a water hosing technique, the particular foundation developed by Universal Foundation sucks itself into the sea bottom.

First foundations will measure weather conditions
In order to gather data about the weather conditions at the Dogger Bank throughout the next few years, the two first foundations will be used as base for two masts equipped with weather measurements. British company Forewinds, who have purchased the foundations, are planning on constructing an offshore windfarm with a capacity of 9 gigawatts based on the data collected by the two new foundations’ weather measurements.

“We have used this opportunity to demonstrate a new and expiring technology with a potential that reaches far beyond the Dogger Bank project”, says CEO of Forewinds, Lee Clark to rechargenews.com.
