From North Cape to Cape of Good Hope on an Electrical Bike

The aim of the trip is to explore the world’s renewable energy future. On his way, Gijs is visiting people within the energy sector, and mid May 2012, Gijs made it to State of Green.

Visit to the Minister's office

Minister for Climate, Energy and Building, Mr. Martin Lidegaard, told Gijs how Denmark is planning to become fossil free by 2050 and how the Minister perceives this change himself. Martin Lidegaard explained that a large majority of the Danish parliament supports the plan of supplying 50 percent of Denmark’s energy consumption from wind energy in 2020. In 2050 the goal for the Danish transport and energy system is to be 100 percent dependent on renewable energy sources.

Following the visit to the Minister’s office, Gijs Stevers continued his journey to the island of Samsoe.

A biking energy nerd

A native Dutch, naming Gijs Stevers an energy nerd is not an insult. He has great expertise in renewable energy and has for a longer period of time wished to make his theoretical knowledge compatible with the real world. In order to understand the world’s energy future, Gijs is biking through the world, from North Cape to the Cape of Good Hope. The journey began on April 12th 2012 and Gijs expects to be back in Northern Europe a little less than a year later.

After visiting Samsoe and Jutland in Denmark, Gijs continues to Amsterdam. A journey of 900 kilometers, which he expects will take him 8 days on his electrical bike, which carries him at a speed of app. 25 km/hour.
