Export Boom for Green Danish Backup Power Plants

After spending ten years on developing backup power plants based on fuel cell technology, Dantherm Power can start reaping the fruit of its efforts. As the market for fuel cell technology rapidly expands, the company’s products are becoming the center of increasing attention.

“At the UN Climate Conference COP17 in Durban, South Africa, last December, our 150 kW fuel cells produced power for the conference area. We are market leaders on large growth markets such as China, India and Canada, and we have recently also begun large-scale export to South Korea,” explains Jesper Themsen, CEO at Dantherm Power.

Many advantages to green emergency power plants

The backup power plants are primarily used in the IT- and telecommunications business, for example as a backup for mobile phone masts. There are 5 million backup power plants worldwide – a number still increasing. Until now, diesel generators and lead-acid batteries have been the main energy source for backup power plants, but fuel cell modules constitute an attractive alternative to these due to their green profile: They don’t pollute the environment with heavy metals; they have a longer life span and also a longer backup time. As an extra bonus the fuel cell modules do not smell and are virtually silent.

Danish company is market leader

The international research institute Pike Research has deemed Dantherm Power as a market leader when it comes to backup power plants – in front of four American manufacturers.

According to CEO Jesper Themsen, this is due to the high quality of the product as well as the fact that it is produced very efficiently: “We have far less employees than our competitors when it comes to the product development process – and yet we achieve great results. We believe that this is due to the fact that we in Denmark are very good at cooperating with other companies and driving processes towards results.”
