EUR 1.2 Billion to Fight Air Pollution in Chinese Cities
21 February 2014
China is ready to tackle the challenge of air pollution in its cities. A new EUR 1.2 billion fund has been established to reward cities and regions that proactively take initiatives to improve the environment. Among other things, the Chinese government has highlighted use of energy-efficient boilers in power plants and energy-saving solutions in buildings:
“Danish companies hold competences in the delivery of highly energy-efficient boilers and systems, which provide an effective utilisation of coal as well as flexible production of electricity and district heating”, says consultant at the Confederation of Danish Industry Casper Andersen.

He continues by pointing out that Danish solutions within in district heating and combined heat and power production would be a quantum leap for China in its battle against air pollution, notably because Danish solutions have succeeded in merging these two areas.
Building Green
Experiences in energy-efficient building and lessons-learned in the Danish building industry may also benefit the Chinese ambition to lower its pollution:
“We have a mind-set of energy efficiency when we build in Denmark, and this may help the Chinese in reducing pollution significantly. Danish buildings have energy-efficient windows, thermostats and they are isolated, which makes them easy to heat – it gives the optimal balance between supply and consumption, says Casper Andersen.
Oftentimes, the best solution is one that incorporates an integrated approach to the challenge in question - in this case the challenge of air pollution. One of such examples can be found in Anshan where Danfoss and COWI have implemented a large-scale district heating system that utilizes the excess heat produced from a local steel plant and to heat the homes of 1.8 million citizens in Anshan.
