The Danish government recently entered into a historic energy agreement, which strengthens Denmark’s position as a world leader in green energy. New ambitious goals give foreign wind energy companies an even more favourable investment climate in Denmark because they ensure that half of the electricity consumption will come from wind power in 2020 and 35 percent of total energy will come from renewables by 2020.

Denmark’s minister for trade and investment Pia Olsen Dyhr states:

- The new energy agreement is a corner stone for the future development of Denmark’s energy sector. A broad majority of the Danish parliament has entered into this agreement, which ensures that Danish energy policy will continue regardless of changing government majorities. This cements Denmark’s position as a global leader within green energy and makes Denmark an ideal location for new wind energy investments.

A leading position within wind energy

On Monday 3pm, the Minister for Trade and Investment meets with foreign investors at the EWEA investor seminar ’Denmark - the Global Wind Power Hub’ arranged by Invest in Denmark and The Danish Wind Industry Association.

The focus of the investor seminar will be on Denmark as a world leading centre for wind turbine research and development.

Pia Olsen Dyhr states:

- Denmark today has the world’s most developed cluster of wind energy companies. Nowhere do you find so many competent and experienced wind professionals as you see in Denmark. And they are supported by hundreds of sub-suppliers, making the whole value chain complete within a very small geographical area. If you want to make business in wind energy, you find it all in Denmark.

In 2011, around 20 percent of the world’s wind turbines were supplied by Danish-based companies. Global companies like Vestas, Siemens Wind Power, Suzlon and Envision Energy all have R&D activities in Denmark.

About Denmark’s new energy agreement:

7 out of 8 parties in the Danish Parliament stand behind the agreement which outlines the framework for the Danish climate and energy policy until 2020 and the direction until 2050.

CO2 emissions in 2020 will be 34 percent less than they were in 1990. Energy consumption will decrease by 12 percent in 2020 compared to 2006. Around 35 percent of the country’s energy will come from renewable sources and almost 50 percent of electricity will come from wind. It has also been decided to build a total of 3300 MW new wind power. A part of it is two new large offshore wind farms at Kriegers Flak between Denmark and Germany (600 MW) and at Horns Reef off the west coast of Jutland (400 MW). The rest is coming from wind turbines on land and offshore wind turbines in coastal areas.

The agreement will help Denmark achieve its goal of supplying 100% of its energy from renewables by 2050.
