Denmark Debates Climate Policy in Washington

Ministers from the world’s 17 largest economies will meet at Major Economies Forum (MEF) to discuss how to make progress during climate negotiations and set concrete initiatives to aid the reduction of green house gas emissions. A key item on the meeting agenda is how to increase energy efficiency in buildings. This area holds enormous potential as buildings alone account for 40 % of world energy consumption:

“I am proud that we are invited to these pivotal meetings. Denmark can contribute greatly in relation to reducing energy consumption in buildings. Compared to the other members of MEF, Denmark is tiny. But our ambitious energy- and climate policy means that we can take a seat with the giants. And they listen to what we have to say, says Minister of Climate, Energy and Building Martin Lidegaard.

Climate funding

The meeting on climate funding is aimed at obtaining more private investors willing to invest in climate projects in developing countries. Studies show that money is available but a number of barriers hold back investors. The meeting was initiated by USA and one of the reasons for inviting Denmark has been that we, as one of the only countries, had allocated funds for climate funding at COP18 in Doha last year.
