DONG Energy and MASDAR Cooperate on Waste Treatment

Together with His Royal Highness, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, and Rasmus Helveg, Denmark's Minister for Development Cooperation, Thomas Dalsgaard, Executive Vice President in Thermal Power at DONG Energy, has left the country for Abu Dhabi in order to enter into a new cooperation.

On behalf of Denmark, the Crown Prince and the Minister enter into an agreement with the United Arab Emirates, and on behalf of DONG Energy, Thomas Dalsgaard signs a cooperation agreement with the investment company Masdar.

"We see some interesting perspectives in the MEA region which faces great challenges when it comes to handling increasing waste volumes, so we're pleased that Masdar wants to cooperate with us to examine the business potentials in the area," said Thomas Dalsgaard.

Utilising resources in waste
To begin with, the cooperation agreement comprises REnescience, and under this agreement, DONG Energy and Masdar are to study the market and the possibilities of using the REnescience technology for waste management and recycling in the Middle East and Africa.

"We expect that REnescience can supply solutions contributing to utilisation of the resources contained in the waste of the region. If the preliminary analyses look promising, and we can agree to proceed with a full-scale plant, we expect that this could result in orders which would also benefit our Danish and foreign subcontractors," said Thomas Dalsgaard.

About the partnership

The cooperation between DONG Energy and Masdar will be a partnership where New Bio Solutions' knowledge and know-how within biobased waste management are combined with Masdar's extensive commercial activities and network in the MEA region.
The agreement consists of two phases: In the first phase, the technology must be adapted for the local and regional conditions and a decision must be made on the establishment of a demonstration plant. In the second phase, the parties must establish a commercial platform to propagate the REnescience technology in the MEA region.

The parties expect to complete the first phase within 12 to 18 months.

About Masdar

Masdar is responsible for the construction of Masdar City; the world's first CO2 neutral and waste-free city. Approximately USD 2.28  billion has been allocated to the project which is expected to be completed in 2018.  Masdar Institute of Science & Technology is Masdar's second business unit and is the platform for research and development in Masdar City. The third business unit is Masdar Power that invests in renewable energy projects and cleantech companies focusing on concentrated solar energy and wind power.  Masdar Power is a co-owner of London Array, among others. Masdar's fourth and last business unit is Masdar Carbon aiming to reduce the regional emission of CO2 and other greenhouse gases through a wide investment portfolio.

About REnescience

REnescience supplies the world with a new clean technology turning mixed municipal solid waste (MSW) into "bioliquid" and other valuable products. REnescience offers significantly higher capture rates of the biodegradable materials (more than 90% ends in the bioliquid), higher recycling rates of waste and more sustainable waste management than traditional practices. Source separation of household waste is no longer necessary, as REnescience does the job a lot better than even the best manual systems. But where source separation does take place, REnescience can supplement and make source separation work even better.
