3D Techniques to Improve Development of New Energy Technologies
The Danish Council for Strategic Research has granted EUR 3.08 million to CINEMA - Alliance for Imaging and Modelling of Energy Applications - which comprises researchers from DTU (Technical University of Denmark) and the University of Copenhagen along with four Danish companies: Haldor Topsøe, LM Wind Power, Amminex Emission Technology and Xnovo Technology. The grant brings the total budget for CINEMA to EUR 6.03 million.
The goal of CINEMA is to develop methods to investigate and follow changes in the microstructure of energetic materials in 3D while they are in use. This makes it possible to find correlations between material performance and changes in local microstructure, thereby leading to the optimization of the material properties:
"These 3D techniques allow us, for the first time, to look into the materials and observe what happens to them while they are in use. This means that we can understand their properties better," explains Project Manager and Professor at DTU Physics Henning Friis Poulsen.
CINEMA applications
The new 3D analysis techniques can be used to improve fuel cells and particulate filters that clean the exhaust gases of diesel cars. 3D analyses are also used to improve the strength of the wind turbine blades by predicting when and where injuries will occur due to 'fatigue', explains Director of Materials & Process Torben Jacobsen Krogsdal from LM Wind Power, who has high hopes for the results:
"We expect to gain much better insight into the failure mechanisms of composite materials that we can use in our development of next generation materials for the wind turbine blades", says Krogsdal.
