There has been an overwhelming interest in the two public funding pools for electric cars, which have received applications for more than EUR 12 million.

“I am pleased that there has been such great interest in electric cars. It illustrates the growth in the green transition. Municipalities, regions, companies and many others take responsibility and demonstrate that environmental consideration and economic sustainability can be two sides of the same coin, says Minister for Climate, Energy and Building Martin Lidegaard.

The money is allocated from two funding pools, which were created during the Danish energy agreement of 2012. The one pool holds EUR 3.15 million for strategic electric car partnerships, and the other holds EUR 1.07 million for smaller research projects. This funding is expected to increase the number of electric cars from 1,581 to 3,056.

Strategic partnerships for electric cars

The funding pools trigger four strategic partnerships for electric cars.

The first is a shared car project for electric cars, which is supported by the Capital Region of Denmark that will provide the charging infrastructure for 400 shared cars in the Copenhagen area.

The Capital Region of Denmark’s partnership for electric cars cooperates with private companies and municipalities in the region to bring 500 electric cars to the streets. As part of the project, post delivery in central Copenhagen and on the island of Bornholm will be electrified.

In the Triangle Region (the area between Kolding, Vejle and Fredericia) the Danish Electric Vehicle Alliance, an independent trade association under the Danish Energy Association, cooperates with municipalities, companies and organisations to increase the number of electric cars by 100.

Finally, a partnership with a leasing company has developed a concept aimed at municipalities and companies, which contains 400 new electric cars.

In addition to the four strategic partnerships, 15 smaller research projects will also contribute to bringing more electric cars on the streets.

The Danish Energy Agency expects 1,400 new electric cars in 2014 and an additional 75 cars in 2015 as a result of the public funding pools.
