25 years of focus on energy and the climate
Randers Municipality (pop. 94,250) occupies a particularly strong position in the fields of energy and climate.
Over the past 25 years, Randers and environs has established itself as the Danish front-runner in the development of energy and environment friendly technologies.
One of the first serious electric car projects in Europe saw the light of day here with the development and production of a single-seater city car, the "Ellert", which was financed by the local community.
It was also here that Denmark's wind turbine adventure began. NEG Micon (later Vestas A/S) developed and produced large modern wind turbines. Wind turbine manufacturer Vestas has its headquarters in Randers. And at the Overgaard estate in Randers municipality one can visit Denmark's largest on-land wind turbine farm.
The development of environment and energy friendly trains has played a major role in Randers. The town's 60 year-old train factory (now Bombardier A/S) develops modern energy technology solutions to match the challenges of public transport.
In 2010 the city of Randers, with its population of 60,000 and its industry, will become the first town in Denmark whose energy supply (heat and electricity) is derived solely from CO2-neutral biomass.
