City of Esbjerg

City of Esbjerg

The Municipality of Esbjerg is situated at the Southwest Coast of the Danish mainland Jutland and is the 5th biggest Danish Municipality with app. 115.000 inhabitants.

In the North Sea just outside Esbjerg you find the offshore wind farms Horns Reef I and II with a combined capacity of 369 MW.

Esbjerg Harbour has decided to buy electricity from the windmill farms, so that all the electrical power at the harbour will be sustainable. More than half the Danish export of windmills is now shipped out from Esbjerg.

The municipality’s plan for growth emphasizes energy. The goal is to become the hearth of energy technology in Denmark. The municipality has implemented green accounting and climate/environment management. In 1988 one of the first Danish windmills (2 MW) was deployed in a testing area outside the city. The municipality currently has 57 windmills with an output of 488 MWh, and areas for new windmills have been pointed out.

In 2007-2008 the village of Guldager in participation with the municipality entered into a successful program for reducing CO2 emissions. All the inhabitants had their CO2 emission measured during a full year and managed to reduce the emission by one ton of CO2 in average.

Also the DONG power plant in Esbjerg experiments with removing CO2 from the smoke.

Besides that we have experience with coastal protection in relation to climatic conditions.
